Basic Sciences of Oncology
BASIC SCIENCES OF ONCOLOGY PROGRAM 2010
The MOGA Basic Sciences of Oncology Program was a one and a half day professional training opportunity for advanced trainees in medical oncology in Australia and New Zealand held on March 27-28, supported by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline.
The Program was convened by Professor Michael Brown, MOGA Deputy Chairman, and aimed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the scientific basis of cellular mechanisms and treatments used in medical oncology in order to enable advanced trainees to develop a strong knowledgebase for use in practice and clinical trials.

In 2009, MOGA launched a new educational program for medical oncology advanced trainees to be run on annual or biennial basis: the MOGA Basic Sciences of Oncology Weekend. This professional training opportunity aims to provide a scientific basis of cellular mechanisms and treatments used in oncology to form a solid knowledge basis for understanding treatments and clinical trials.
Basic Sciences of Oncology is open to Australian trainees in medical oncology at no cost to participants. Supervisors are requested to release medical oncology trainees from their normal duties so that they can participate.
Basic Sciences of Oncology reviews the following topics with expert speakers:
- Cell cycle and chemotherapy
- Targeted therapies
- Vaccines and cancer
- Molecular pathology testing
- Familial cancer and genetics
The 2009 Basic Sciences of Oncology Weekend was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline. The 2009 speakers were:
